About India Currents

India Currents is an important facet of America’s emerging multicultural identity—a monthly publication devoted to the exploration of the heritage and culture of India as it exists in the United States. The magazine covers a wide range of subjects—music, dance, film, literature, travel, recipes, business—that are of interest to Indian-Americans and Indophiles. At the heart of the magazine is a comprehensive calendar of Indian events, used extensively by readers to plan their leisure and entertainment.

The premise on which India Currents is founded is simple: that Americans of all backgrounds are interested in learning about other world cultures and that they respond to information that is presented to them in an accessible and attractive manner.

India Currents has won a lot of praise and recognition for its editorial content over the years. In 1991, the Federation of Indo-American Associations honored India Currents with its “Cultural Awareness Through Journalism” award.

*  In 1994, India Currents was nominated for the Arts and Business Award given by the Arts Council of Santa Clara County in two categories: “Ongoing Business Support for the Arts,” and “Innovation in Support for the Arts.” KQED and The Examiner honored the India Currents Editor Arvind Kumar as an Unsung Hero in 1995.

*  In 1998, Business Editor Sukumar Ramanathan won the New California Media Award for Feature Writing and Contributing Editor Sarita Sarvate won the award for Commentary Writing.

*  In 1999, Sukumar Ramanathan was runner-up for the New California Media Award in the Features category.

*  In 2000, Features Editor Sandip Roy-Chowdhury won the South Asian Journalists Association award for outstanding story on South Asians in North America (print).

*  In 2001, Sarita Sarvate won the runner-up New California Media Award for Best Commentary Writing in magazines with circulation over 25,000.

*  In 2004, India Currents was nominated for the Utne Reader's Independent Press Award for International Coverage.
