Double Header Santoor and Vocal Concert

Madan Oak (santoor) is a student of the world-renowned santoor maestro Shivkumar Sharma. He has been studying Indian classical music for over 25 years. Oak has won several college and university-level awards in Classical music competitions and is recipient of the 1986 All India Radio (AIR) Best Instrumentalist National award. Ashwini Khaparde (vocal) will be accompanied by Satish Tare (tabla) and Vivek Datar (harmonium). Khaparde was initiated into music by her father, Shashikant Thombre, at tender age of 5. Subsequently, she learned from the eminent Usha Parkhi of the Kirana gharana for eight years. She has continued to learn from Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande, a leading performer of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. Khaparde combines the two gharanas easily and melodiously and presents compositions bringing out the best of both the gharanas. Apart from Bandish Gayaki, Khaparde’s large repertoire includes semi-classical forms like Thumari, Dadara, Tappa, Hori, Kajari, etc. Marathi Natya Sangeet is her another specialty. Santoor recital will be at 4:30 p.m., and vocal recital at 7 p.m.
